Case Study: The Vollmer Center at Cylburn Arboretum Solving a conservation crisis with solar bird film.

Industry
Municipal Building | Public Park | Nature Center

Challenge
The building's all-glass facade resulted in daily bird strikes, but limited funding made actionable solutions difficult. Solar bird safety film provided the dual benefit of reducing strikes while delivering energy savings, creating the ROI needed to justify the investment.

Results
The building noted an extreme decline in bird strikes, with no strikes reported in the first four months after installation. The solar film is projected to save approximately 10,500 kWh of energy each year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of three city rowhomes.

“We’ve dramatically improved the longevity and operating costs of the building by making the glass more resilient, while also saving birds and reducing summer peak loads. This is a permanent solution for the whole building.

A Premier Venue That Was Invisible To Birds Cylburn Arboretum's Vollmer Center

Trailblazing in its original design, the Vollmer Center opened in 2010 as the city's first "green building", with composting toilets, green roofs, and geothermal heating. The Vollmer Center's iconic views of the park made it a desirable venue for public programs, weddings, and corporate events.

The Challenge

Constructed of more than 4,000 square feet of glass, the building offered unparalleled views of the park's lush and diverse landscape-- an architectural masterpiece. Yet that same glass invited intense solar heat and posed a deadly hazard to local and migratory birds.

The Solution

After years of searching for a way to prevent bird strikes, the breakthrough came with a solution that addressed both challenges at once: Solyx® BSF-DB35 Solar Bird Safety Film—an energy-saving solar film that not only delivers measurable ROI but also significantly reduces bird collisions.

“The most common myth is that all birds are hitting skyscrapers. In reality, the majority strike low-rise buildings and residential homes. If everyone took steps to treat just one or two windows, we could make a drastic difference."
